This 20 page board book doesn’t come out for a few months, but it really is adorable, and I love that it centers Islam, so I’m putting it on your radar hoping you might preorder to show your support.  This ever growing series highlights different countries by OWN voice authors, focuses on simple text, cultural insight, linguistic samples, and bright illustrations.  The book follows a little girl from morning to bedtime and then highlights parts of the unique cultural aspects shared in the back-ish matter.

The book starts with Subah Bakhair, good morning, written in Urdu and English, before AllahuAkbar and prayers are made. Then it is time to get dressed and deciding what to wear.  Little brother is in a swinging cradle, and paratha and lassi are shared with family.  The little protagonist then heads on the driverless orange trains with her Dada, grandfather, to do some shopping, concluding with bedtime du’aas.

Board books are a little tricky for me as if they are more than just a few words on a very basic topic, they seem to be really jumpy or really wordy.  If they manage to not have long blocks of text, and stay on the intended audience’s level, they seem to be random in what is included.  This book is no exception. I am not sure how the words were chosen to include in Urdu script, why some words are given for specific things like shalwar kameez, but not for the joolah.  Not sure why the bathroom, getting ready for bed scene is included, and why lota is highlighted in the end, either.  I’m sure to someone else it seems logical, there is nothing “wrong” with it, it just seemed a little disjointed from the rest of the inclusions.

I love the illustrations, they are engaging and joyful.  Desis have a decent amount of rep in children’s books, but a board book dedicated just to Pakistan widely available here in the west, that is OWN voice, features Islam, and well done, really is delightful to see, alhumdulillah.

I feel like I should have really liked this 264 page book: OWN voice, Muslim, MG, Pakistani, author is poet laureate for the City of Mississauga, Ontario, co authored by a prolific YA writer, but it unfortunately reads inconsistent and unpolished.  The characters at the beginning and their relationships with one another don’t read consistent with who they are in the middle.  Sure the character arcs from the middle to the end are nice, but it feels really disjointed from the first quarter of the book.  There are parts that feel so rushed, and other parts that are heavy handed with the preaching and the moral lessoning that I found myself skimming whole pages.  He says his family isn’t that “religious,” but Islam is centered with quotes from “the Prophet” (no salawat given, only a few times Prophet Muhammad is mentioned to identify which Prophet is being quoted) and “Imam Ali” (who the protagonist is named after), yet Al telling a girl he likes her is no problem at all.  He fasts because he has to, but tells his younger brother it is ok to sneak food, and the grandfather gives a whole speech on how the purpose of fasting is to feel empathy for the poor (face palm, in case you don’t know, it is a commandment of Allah swt).  I really struggled with how “Whites” are seen as opposites to “Muslims,” there is some push back with quotes from Malcom X on his hajj experience, but I didn’t feel like the character really ever accepted that Islam is a religion for all people, and White is a skin color.  Honestly the book reads like an early 2000 memoir.  I know it is fiction, but the cultural be-a-doctor-nothing-else-matters-stereotypes, and Islamophobic talking points that feel performative for a Western gaze, combine with a very unlikable arrogant protagonist, and result in a book that was difficult to connect with and get through.

SYNOPSIS:
Al, short for Ali does everything perfect, he has perfect grades, always listens to his parents, and respects the rules.  The book opens with him sneaking off campus with friends for lunch at the mall where he is caught by his grandfather, who seems incredibly strict, but later is the soft spot in a firm family.  His parents have moved to Canada from Pakistan, his mom used to be a teacher, but now takes care of their apartment building, his father was a physician and now drives a taxi.  It is non negotiable that Al will be a physician when he grows up.  The middle child of all brothers, his older brother Sam, short for Osama, has set the bar very high with his valedictorian status in high school, scholarships to start college, and student of the year award in middle school.  Al is in 8th grade and is expected to follow in his footsteps.  When Al’s crush on Melissa results in him writing a poem about her, he realizes he likes the written word to express himself.  His father thinks poetry is a waste of time. With a teacher that encourages creative writing, Islamophobia and hate crimes hitting close to home, and Al coming of age, the story focuses on Al’s 8th grade year as he discovers his own identity, with some help from his friends and the month of Ramadan.

WHY I LIKE IT:

I like that his friends really pushed back on him to own some of his internalized Islamophobia.  Zach is probably the most fleshed out character, and his humor, his teacher crush, his ability to apologize and make things right, is really the heart of the book.  It contrasts so greatly to how I feel about Al.  By the end he was ok, but at the beginning, his arrogance is obnoxious. I get that he is bright and a hard worker, but, yikes, he needs some humbleness.  The supporting characters are rather flat.  Al’s crush Melissa is shallow and only desired for her appearance, Dad is strict and demanding, not in an abusive way, but in a cold undeveloped way, mom is idyllic and supportive, and Ms. McIntosh is the driving motivator for Al. The other characters do little to flesh out the main players which is unfortunate.  I think some depth would have shown Al more rounded. His so called friends don’t know he is Muslim or what he eats, but they are friends, not just classmates, seems off and lacking.  The grandfather gives all the teachable moments, he starts off stern, and then is not, and the transition is jarring.  He speaks in quotes and lessons, and if it were quirky, it might help the flow of the book, but he really is the Islamic conscience of the book so to speak, but we know so little about him and his relationship with Al.

I didn’t like how fasting and Ramadan were presented. Al is embarrassed by fasting and being different.  I like that it says the family goes to the mosque, not sure why masjid wasn’t used, but there are no Muslim friends and no praying, so it has no real impact, which furthers the feeling that it is performative.  Al doesn’t seem to consider faith or culture until others question him about it, which is a missed opportunity to give Muslim kids a mirror to see themselves in the characters.  There are chapters of the book that really are wonderfully written, they just are sadly too far and few between.

FLAGS:

Crushes, Islamophobia, physical and verbal assault, racism, classism, bullying, lying, sneaking out, discussion of partition violence including great grandfather being killed. The book though, aside from the crush thread at the start and end, is quite clean, and the crush is pretty innocent.

TOOLS FOR LEADING THE DISCUSSION:
I wouldn’t seek out this book for a classroom shelf, but if it was in the library I would leave it.  I don’t think most kids would pick it up and make it past the first 25 pages though, Al is really unlikeable at the start.

It is with great joy that I was able to ask my dear friend, and favorite author Shifa Saltagi Safadi a few questions about her upcoming book KAREEM BETWEEN and offer her answers, insights, and wisdom with all of you.  To sweeten the deal we also have an ARC to give away to one lucky US reader.

KIRIN: Kareem Between is a middle grade novel in verse that tugs at your heart without compromising action, relatability, and joy. It is in simple terms, a coming-of-age story of a boy between, as it says on the back of the book: “Between countries. Between friends. Between football, between family- and between right and wrong.” Yet, somehow it is so much more than all of that, what do you want readers to take away from the book?

SHIFA:  What a great question. 

There is absolutely so much for readers to find in Kareem in terms of themes, but the one that probably means the most to me is the one about belonging. I think we all have felt a little lost in this world at times, both as tweens in Middle School, and even as adults! And I want readers to know that it’s okay to not always fit in this perfect box- that being in the middle, being in between, can be a position of strength. The world seeks to categorize people into labels, and especially marginalized people- and in Kareem’s and my own case, Muslims and Syrians, can be put in this box of “outsider” and “foreigner”, and honestly, many times even “terrorist”. And I wanted to challenge these labels. Both in terms of what it means to be Arab, as in the character Fadi’s case, he is a Christian Syrian- and in terms of being American- what does it mean to be a citizen of this country. 

440341113_2133090993721514_84614182741726886_nUltimately, I want young readers to know that they can embrace the full complicated different facets of who they are without having to conform to peer pressure or labels. That even if it seems easier to step away from parts of yourself to fit in, it isn’t worth it when you erase your feelings. That pride in yourself and confidence in using your unique voice and story will be your asset in this world. And just as Kareem uses his voice at a protest in the O’Hare Airport against the Muslim Ban, and to speak on his local news outlet- I hope young readers use their own voices to stand up for justice, and stand up for themselves.

KIRIN: Many OWN voice writers often say they write the books they wish they had when they were younger, is this your motivation as well? What does authentic, OWN voice, unapologetic representation mean to you?

SHIFA:  Oh absolutely! Kareem contains so many different parts of me. I genuinely open up my own heart and pour my emotions onto the page when I write- it is very much an emotional experience and I cried while writing Kareem. And honestly, even every reread- I feel like I go through his character arc with him, especially with the recent news dehumanizing Palestinian lives and how it has become so controversial in some spaces to even call for a ceasefire!

Own voice representation is so important to me. As a reviewer, I often find myself flipping to read the Author’s note to check that the book is authentic. And as a reader- I find myself being moved so much more when the book is written from a writer’s heart.

But also, as a writer- I honestly think I was just tired of the same narrative I have seen my whole life as a Muslim growing up in America- the tired trope of “Islamist terrorist” that makes its way unto movies and media TO THIS day. Of this label that somehow being a practicing Muslim means you are dangerous, strict, mean, inhumane.

I want readers to meet Kareem. To see our humanity. To see how much peace Islam brings me. To take a pause- and maybe even cause a transformation inside of them on how they perceive Muslims and Arabs. To see that we are all connected in our humanity- that laws like the “Muslim Ban” are harmful because not only does it other a whole group of humans, but it strips part of the very principles that America claims to be founded upon.

KIRIN: This is your first middle grade novel, what made you decide to write it in verse, and what was the process like? What was the most challenging part of the process?

SHIFA:  Interestingly enough- I didn’t start writing KAREEM in verse. It was very much a story in prose, about a kid who wants to make the football team and faces school bullies. I was taking a mentorship with Storyteller Academy (I am a huge fan of writing courses!) when my mentor Sage Blackwood told me the voice of my prose wasn’t working. And suggested trying another format. 

I have always adored verse, but I honestly did not think I was talented enough to try it! But I attempted a few pages, interestingly enough, from the middle of the book- and Sage immediately told me they clicked into place! (Thank you Sage). And so then I rewrote the whole book into verse! 

The most challenging part was to probably believe in myself- that I could actually write poetry- and once I got over that hurdle, the words just flowed!! 

I feel like the verse format was also helpful for me in crafting the emotional arc. I remember being SO SCARED when Trump won the 2016 elections. Being terrified for myself and my kids’ future. And I remember the devastation of the Muslim Ban and how it affected our communities, both here and abroad. And verse helped me with using language, as well as the empty space on the page, to really show these deep emotions of emptiness and loss, but in a way that wasn’t too heavy for children. 

The sparse verse on the page helps kids be able to digest these very real themes in a way that they can still find hope and life, and the lyrical language and words of poetry helped me infuse beauty even in the darkest moments of the book. And I wanted to be able to offer that lifeline to readers- that even when things get tough and difficult- the hope in those moments is in finding your words. 

KIRIN: Kareem is confident in his Muslim identity, praying at school is normalized, and while he loves his Syrian and American cultures, he does try and find his footing in being both.  Why was the distinction between faith and cultural identity important in the story and why is it important to you?

SHIFA:  Thank you for this question!

Faith is so important for me. Islam has been my lifeline, my rope of hope in this world, my very heartbeat that I live with. And being Muslim for me is very much a full complete experience, one I embrace with every facet of my being.

And I think part of the reason that Islam is so very important to me is probably a result of my feeling so between two cultures.

I was always between Syrian and American growing up- but I knew my faith and my Creator had space for my whole self, my imperfect, between, flawed heart. And that’s why Islam for me has always been a non-negotiable part of my identity. I am a Muslim. It is my life. I have never considered removing my hijab- even when it gets tough and I get stares. I have never considered not praying, even when I used to get weird stares at sticking my foot in sinks at school or praying in public view. This is me.

And Kareem is the same way. He prays, goes to Jummah, reads Quran, turns to Allah in duaa- and not for one second does he ever consider letting go of being Muslim. Because its who he is, and it’s the rope he holds onto in navigating his two cultures. 

It is very important for me to distinguish culture and faith for another reason. There is this common misconception that Muslims and Arabs are the same. But this is not true! So many Arabs are Christians, Jews, Druze, Armenian- and so many Muslims are South Asian, Eastern European, and even white!! The country with the most Muslim population is not even an Arab country. And I also have many white American friends who embraced Islam who tell me how much it hurts for them to feel like the world erases their own identity as Muslims as well. 

I wanted to challenge these labels, and especially when Kareem tells his dad that the Muslim ban doesn’t only affect Muslims, but would have affected Fadi, I wanted the reader to pause. To think. 

And to realize that othering and stereotyping is in its very essence flawed.

KIRIN: Most western middle grade readers in 2024 probably don’t spend much time thinking about Executive Order 13769, “The Muslim Ban” what do you hope Kareem and his family provide for readers in understanding how it impacted families.  

 SHIFA: When I started writing this book, I remember having one wish for it. That it gets published in 2024. And there was one reason for that- I wanted it out before the elections this year.

And the reason for my wish is because I want my book to make a difference. The closer we get to elections, the more this book feels so important for people to read. This year’s elections somehow feel just as stressful as the 2016-year elections, and the same issues of Islamophobia and Anti-Arab racism are propping up again everywhere on media and campaign speeches. And I want readers to really think on the very real effects of how American elections can impact marginalized groups in the world. 

I really wanted the book to be a peek into what it was like to be Muslim and Syrian in America in 2016/2017 to inspire readers to feel compassion, to think about how politics are automatically part of your identity when you are marginalized. 

I also wanted to take back the narrative. I want readers to be brave. Don’t feel silenced anymore- refuse the fear or helplessness of not being able to control who will be President. Because as 2017 showed us, when unfair laws based on racism are signed- WE DO HAVE POWER as citizens. We resisted the Muslim ban, we protested, Americans stood up for justice- and it proved that we can make change. 

And more than anything- that’s what I want readers to think about when it comes to the Muslim ban. It is about SO MUCH MORE than Executive Order 13769. It is about standing up for justice, whether that is against systemic racism, against book banning, against border deportations, against funding wars with our tax dollars.

It is about using our voice. I want young readers to know they are powerful, and to use their privileges to make change.

KIRIN: Is this the end for Kareem? Do you see him making a cameo in future books perhaps? My kids read the book, and really want to know what Kareem is like in high school? Where he is going to college, what his future looks like. 

SHIFA:  As of now, I don’t have any future plans, but hey, if my editor and publisher request more, I would jump on that immediately!! 

As for Kareem’s future- he was actually born the day of the Superbowl in 2004 (obviously lol) – so February 1st. He’s now 20 years old in 2024! 

He’s in football training in college, in Chicago of course. And although he wanted to be the youngest player ever drafted to the NFL, he got beat by another former Chicago Bears player- Amobi Okoye, who played at 19!!

But it’s okay- life might not be perfect, but Kareem is still persevering towards his dream. And when he’s not organizing his MSA’s Jummah prayers or practicing football (or reading the latest books at his library), he’s at a downtown Chicago protest for  ine, holding up posters and using his voice to call for a ceasefire!

KIRIN: What are you currently working on, and what future books can we look forward to seeing from you?

SHIFA:  I have more books lined up in 2025- a picture book titled Gift of Eid coming in February, and a whole chapter book series titled Amina Banana coming mid-year! I cannot wait to share my sweet Yasmine (Gift of Eid) and my spunky, sassy Amina! I have a feeling readers are going to adore these books!

As for Middle Grade: 

I love writing novels in verse, and I am actually currently finishing up writing my second one, eeek- this one is a bit wild and fun, but still containing emotion and heart as well. And of course, using verse language and lyrical words on the page to create art.

I don’t want to spoil it, but it’s been such an experience to write and revise my second book, and I am excited and slightly scared about how it’s turning out. Will I ever kick imposter syndrome to the curb? 

It’s still not ready to share, so I won’t say anything more- but I am hoping I can share it with the world someday insha Allah!

I admittedly wanted to read this book because the author is of Palestinian descent. I have seen clips of her standup and I’m not a huge fan, although I do appreciate that she doesn’t deny her culture and Islam, doesn’t let her cerebral palsy keep her from working toward her dreams, and that she is successful.  All good messages for a 256 page middle grade graphic novel that is not autobiographical, but draws on her life none-the-less.  I was surprised, though, that there are no Palestinian references in the book, very few Arab cultural touchstones either, and yet swearing on the Quran and not eating pork are presented fairly often, almost as “bits” to be laughed at.  I truly understand that the character is presented as culturally Muslim more than centering Islam in her identity, but perhaps because the protagonist, Bay Ann, is rather unlikeable, it just rubbed me the wrong way.  I love that the people in Bay Ann’s life do not caudle her, and that she is fierce and dramatic and driven, but she is an awful friend, her obsession with Alyee Maq (yes full names are used throughout) gets annoying, and I worry that some of the humor will be missed for the younger target audience and be taken as Muslim or Arab norms.  The presentation of a disability in a well illustrated graphic novel is empowering, an amazing Arab dad is nice to see, a divorced family co-parenting is important, but the foundation for much of the story is Bay Ann’s crush on Alyee Maq, he does kiss her on the cheek for social media likes, the book starts with Halloween Idol, features dancing throughout, and concludes with a Nondenominational Holiday Spectacular.  Bay Ann’s mom is not very kind or involved, and Alyee Maq’s mom, the only hijabi in the book, also is rather rough.  This is a book where I acknowledge my own overthinking, as both an adult reader and reviewer.  If you are ok with the (random) Islamic rep, kids will benefit from seeing Bay Ann as a fully capable person who happens to have a disability.  I’d suggest seeing if your local library has the book and looking through it first to see if you are comfortable passing it on to your kids.

SYNOPSIS:

Bay Ann is a tap dancer and with Halloween Idol coming up, she plans to win.  Her best friend Michelle is going to do her make-up as a zombie bride, and be her zombie bridesmaid with Davey Matt, the third in their trio, being the dead ring-bearer dog.  They can’t be her backup dancers because she is a one woman show, but she needs them to cheer her on.  When she wins, she has the spotlight stolen from her by Alyee Maq kissing her claiming he is making “a sick girls dream come true.” The clip goes viral, as Alyee Maq is a bit of a celebrity and the competition is on.  Whether it is science fair, social media posts, or the class debate, Bay Ann is determined to knock Alyee Maq down, claim the online spotlight, and  prove her talent is more than her disability.  With each attempt failing, her resolve grows stronger and her tunnel vision pushes those closest to her away, as she joins Alyee Maq with the hopes that if she can’t beat him, she will join him and achieve the fame she seeks.

WHY I LIKE IT:

I know the book is rather intentionally ridiculous, but I wanted to cheer for Bay Ann, and I never really liked her.  I don’t like how she treats Davey Matt, or even Michelle.  If she was better to them at the beginning, I think it would have shown how disconnected her mom Malak is as well as the school administrators, and made it more funny, but it truly just makes her seem like she is awful to everyone, and thus you don’t really find yourself invested in her stardom, her friendships, or her defining her own narrative.

I wish their was some Arab rep, not just a few Arabic words tossed in here and there.  I also wish there was more Islamic centering, or honestly even less. The swearing on the Quran really bothered me, Friday prayer is mentioned in passing, but there is no impact on the characters or the story, so it seemed misplaced.

The pacing of the story is rushed, and at times a bit chaotic.  I think it is intentional, but it makes it hard to connect to the characters or to grasp their motivations.  I don’t know that I truly ever understood why Bay Ann wants the spotlight, or why Alyee Maq is famous, or why Davey Matt hangs around Michelle and Bay Ann when they belittle him. It doesn’t need to be thoroughly explained, but when you finish the book, and feel exhausted, but can’t even articulate what the book was really about other than a girl that wants to be famous for her talent not her shaking, and won’t let anything or anyone get in her way, it seems like some opportunities were missed.

FLAGS:

Close male and female friendships with touching, an unwanted kiss, lying, manipulation.  Swearing on a Quran, disrespect. Using people.

TOOLS FOR LEADING THE DISCUSSION:

I don’t know that I would seek this book out to own, but in an Islamic school library if it found its way in, I would probably not object to it being shelved.

After years of teaching, librarian-ing, and mothering, my reviewers are for adults, but with kids in mind. I read in different environments and try and balance what children will think with my more critical literary impressions. But honestly, my first reaction when I see Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow has a new book out, is not about the children, or their parents, it is incredibly selfish, and I want to read the picture book for me.  It has been about a year since I first read my all time favorite, Salat in Secret, and I still feel all the feels, every time I read the book. I even enjoy handing the book to people and watching them read it for the first time.  So, I was both excited, and nervous to read this new book, not knowing if it would measure up to my expectations or rather hopes, so to speak.  I needn’t have worried, subhanAllah, this book in it’s own right is moving, heartfelt, layered, powerful, hopeful, relatable, tender, and while staying on a kindergarten to second grade level is also unapologetic with its centering of Islam, race, and feeling invisible, being new, and making a friend.  The illustrations and words blend beautifully, and by the second page of the 40 page book, I was already emotionally attached to the little protagonist Ameena.  Good writing is good writing, and as a result this beautiful book works for all ages and will be appreciated on multiple layers even after dozens of readings, alhumdulillah.

The book begins with Ameena playing a game by herself.  She always plays by herself at school, where she tends to be invisible.  Maybe it is her hair in twists or her brownness, she doesn’t know.  One day a new girl comes, her name is Sundus, she wears hijab like Ameena wears to the masjid.

All day Ameena tries to talk to Sundus, but something always seems to keep them apart.  When they finally meet,  Ameena’s excited words get all tangled, and a misunderstanding occurs.  Ameena decides the next day to transform into a rockstar: red-orange hijab and matching boots. The other kids say she is copying the new girl.  Sundus doesn’t say anything.

Ameena disappears again at school, but family night at the masjid is her happy place.  Where she doesn’t play alone, and there are lots of browns, and she is seen.  When Mama meets a new sister, and greets her with Assalamu Alaikum, Ameena sees how a greeting and a hug can be the start of sisterhood and friendship. And the next time Sundus and Ameena meet, they know just what to say.

The joy at the end forces you to smile, just as Ameena playing alone at the beginning tugs at your heart.  It is a great book to see yourself and see others in a beautiful, authentic way.  The universal themes of not being seen, making a friend, and being the new kid, are woven in just as hijab, masjid and Assalamu Alaikum are, making the book powerful for Muslim and non Muslims alike.

I particularly love that their is no glossary, and that the text uses the word masjid not mosque, hijab not scarf and Assalamu Alaikum not salam.  That the masjid is her safe place to laugh and play, and that this book is mainstream published and will find its way to public spaces and be widely accessible.

The world’s oldest library proudly stands in Fez, Morocco: started by a Muslim woman, restored by a Muslim woman, and in this 40 page book the library itself tells its own story in a book authored by a Muslim woman.  The personified library shares a few highlights from its early start as a corner in Fatima Al-Fihri’s masjid and university to collections spanning multiple buildings, from a bustling center of learning and knowledge to a place of disrepair and neglect.  Staying on an early elementary level, the informative author’s note and references make the book engaging for older readers as well, and an incredible addition to bookshelves everywhere.

The book starts with the library introducing itself and welcoming the reader. “Merhaba! I am Al-Qarawiyyin Library–the oldest library in the world.” At over a thousand years old, the library begins at the hands of Fatima Al-Fihri in 859 who dared to dream big and created a space of learning and worship in Morocco.

As the courtyards and collections grew, seekers of knowledge, from all backgrounds, gathered to discuss, debate, and learn.  Special rooms with special locks kept books safe: a Quran written on camel-leather, a philosophers drawings in gold ink.

Nearly destroyed once by a fire, the library endured, but over time the rooms were no longer filled with the bustle of people.  One day a small girl, Aziza, paused at the door, but did not enter for many years.  When she did return, she came as an architect with a team to restore the library and invite people back in to read, learn, and dream.

It doesn’t matter how many Word documents you read, Goggle docs you add comments to, and screen shots you revise; to hold a physical book in your hands that you have been blessed to observe from the sidelines through numerous revisions, is mind blowing.  Reading the final version from page 1 to page 324, plus the backmatter, has left me at a loss for words with tears streaming down my cheeks. I truly cannot imagine the book any other way. All past drafts and storylines, were just stepping stones to get the book to this version, and as a fan of literature my whole life, to see this metamorphosis in real time has added to my respect and admiration of authors.  Enough about me though, this review is of the middle grade novel in verse that tells the story of Syrian American Kareem, a loveable boy caught in between choices, siblings, friends, labels, and global acts beyond his control.  He makes mistakes, he tries to make things right, and at the center of it all is his Islamic identity, love of football, and genuinely good heart.  I am biased in that I have self appointed Kareem as my nephew, but even after dozens of readings, I was moved to tears three times during the course of this reading.  I made my teens read the book and they loved it, and like them, we hope we get more Kareem in the future.

SYNOPSIS:

Kareem loves football, particularly the Bears, and dreams of seeing his Arabic name on an American jersey one day in the NFL.  Unfortunately, he hasn’t made the school team, his best and only friend Adam has moved away, and the coach’s son is offering to talk to his dad for Kareem in exchange for some school help.  Add in a new Syrian kid at school, his mom going to Syria to take care of his grandfather, and the fruition of Executive Order 13769 aka the Muslim Ban, and seventh grade has Kareem scrambling on every down to say the least.

WHY I LOVE IT:

The football framing, the literary inclusions, the Arabic, the Islam, all combine with such tangible heart to create a seamless read both as a compelling story and as an example of literary craft.  The language is on point and intentional, that even if you don’t know the character or novel referenced, the Arabic words included, or football terminology used, you will be invested in the characters and plot, and find yourself cheering for Kareem.  Often debut authors show promise, but their stories have plot holes, or pacing issues, or inconsistencies, that is not the case with this book.  The crumbs are there that tie everything together, the depth of the characters’ personalities reveal how developed they are, and the timeline keeps the book moving forward.  There are no dry or slow spots in the entire novel, it is easily read in one sitting as you find yourself nervous for Kareem, and curious how it will resolve.

Boys and girls, Muslims and non Muslims, Arabs and non Arabs, all will find themselves drawn to this book, and thinking about the characters, particularly Kareem, long after the final page is read.

The book is a solid middle grade, but the quality of writing and engaging plot makes it work for a middle school book club read as well.  I cannot wait to share this book widely.

Creating understanding and love of Allah swt is perhaps the most important type of Islamic fiction book available for young children, so I love that we have options to choose from. The framing of this book is nothing new, a child asking various people about Allah swt to learn about Him, is found in numerous books.  But, this 32 page book is particularly engaging because of the large brightly illustrated pages, and the author’s signature style of conveying facts in a simple relatable manner.  The comic relief of the unicorn and the adorable protagonist are great, and the added layer of it being checked by two named scholars really make this one of the best in a very populated category.

The book starts with Mimi wondering about Allah swt after hearing people say things such as, “Allah will take care of it,” and “Allah knows.”  She asks her imaginary friend, Unicorn, but she doesn’t know either, so they head off to ask different family members.

Summaya, Mimi’s big sister tells her that  “if you know Allah, you love Him, and He loves you.” It is followed up with details that Allah swt knows us, because he made us. From Nana, Mimi and Unicorn learn that Allah swt is One, and he explains why we don’t know what he looks like.  From Nani we learn that “Allah swt has no beginning and no ending.” Baba explains that we turn to Allah swt when we need help, Unicorn wonders if we need a phone or Imam to do that. Finally she talks to her Mama who explains trusting Allah’s plan.

Each stop is beautifully articulated and examples are given, resulting in a Mimi who’s heart becomes light and warm, and who works to know more about Allah swt every single day.

The backmatter includes notes from the author and illustrator and various bookish people sharing their early understanding of Allah swt and his attributes.

This 32 page story shares a desi family at a henna party before a wedding.  There is nothing Islamic in this book by a Muslim author, it is simply cultural.  The story on its own is fine.  It is sweet and joy filled, as a girl tries to decide who’s name to have hidden in her henna design.  I do wonder though, if the book is meant to be a window into desi culture, why the Urdu word “mehndi” isn’t used instead of henna.  It mentions it in the backmatter, that mehndi is the Urdu word, but it seems a little inauthentic and western gaze presenting throughout the story, and honestly I really struggled to get past it.

The book starts with Noor entering the henna party, the night before her cousins wedding, to sing with the ladies of the family and have their hands painted.  Her mother asks her if she knows about the name game, where the bride hides the grooms name on her hands, and if he finds it, he wins, and if he does not, the bride wins. Noor asks if she can hide someone’s name and her mom says yes, just tell the artist.

She watches her dad setting up decorations and wonders if she should have his name hidden.  She then sees her Mama playing the dholki and singing and wonders if she should hide her mother’s name.  She continues through various family members before making her decision.  Along the way the reader learns about the music, the food, the clothes, and how the paste dries and leaves a color.

The page on food starts with spices, then talks of samosa and then they are eating ladoo, and while I’m glad there is not a glossary, I don’t know that the lacking context clues make any of those scrumptious foods known. I do like that her grandfather helped her pick out her lehenga, and her father is shown decorating to show full family involvement.

Ultimately, though I think the tricky thing about cultural weddings, is that every family has their own traditions, and while in a desi wedding some things might be widespread, when presenting them to readers outside your culture, it is hard to know how they will be perceived.  I almost feel like this book makes it seem that every family hides names in the mehndi as a staple of the festivities. And based on other reviews I’ve read, people seem to feel that this is insightful into the culture, or that hiding and finding names has more weight, a stress even, than just being fun.

I could be over thinking it, but it feels like even the backmatter is trying to cast a wide net over every religion and culture that uses henna and ends up being oddly vague in this specific example.  Like I said the book is adequate, I like that the little protagonist Noor, loves so many people and solves her dilemma on her own, it has plot, and conflict and resolution, it just seems to lack the exciting tone and thus fails in immersing the reader into the henna party.

If you feel that hijab is like salat and that it should be done no matter what, even if you are being forced, your heart is not in it, or you are doing it to appease someone other than Allah swt, than this book might not be for you.  I am not a scholar, I should not be giving anyone Islamic advice or suggestions, but after sitting with this book, having read all 250 pages in one go, this is the crux that I have come up with regarding who will be the target Muslim audience for the book.  The Islam flows and the central Islamic message is the importance of one’s relationship with Allah swt.  So whether the fictional characters are wearing hijab, considering hijab, removing hijab, I was not overly bothered, they were still praying, going to the masjid, attending halaqas, and spending time thinking about their relationship with Allah swt at present, and what they hope it will be in the future.  The niqabi mother never forces her view on her daughters, the book does not get preachy, nor does it only show one perspective, as a result the reader is allowed to appreciate the other themes of the book and the impeccable writing.  That being said, did I wish there was more sitting on the prayer rug conversing with Allah swt about what to do? Yes.  Do I wish that everyone’s hijab journey, both real and fictitious, was easy? Yes. Do I wish we lived in a world that women were respected no matter how they dressed? Absolutely.  This book is middle grade and it takes on numerous sensitive topics, and in my very biased opinion does an incredible job.  The book contains sexual harassment, judgement, peer pressure, stereotypes, gender roles, bullying and so much more.  I truly couldn’t put the book down, the tears of being seen kicked off the book, and then tears of strength concluded the book.  Muslim and non Muslim readers alike, will be better for reading this unapologetic, OWN voice book.

SYNOPSIS:

Ainy’s life is busy: school is wrapping up, summer plans with her best friend Safiya are being made, the family has moved into the basement of her crush Izyaan’s house, her father is in Pakistan caring for an ill grandma, and Amma’s clothing store, Naseerah’s Almari, is getting busy.  Ainy begs to work at the shop as Bajjo takes on a second job to help the family make ends meet, and when her Amma finally agrees, Quratulain’s best laid plans to learn how to be a designer, and have the best summer ever, are about to be challenged.

Before she can design, she has to learn how the shop works, the frustration and time involved make her unable to fulfill her plans with Safiya causing a widening rift with the life long friends.  Bajjo who has always been Ainy’s role model starts shutting her out, and Izyaan’s cousin Yasir seems to be everywhere Ainy is. She is not comfortable with him showing up at her work, bumping in to her all over town, messaging her at night, and while she knows he is in the wrong, she starts to wonder if it is a result of something she has done.  With no one to talk to, Ainy is left to handle the Yasir problem on her own, and the relentless anxiety, isolation, and fear begin to change Ainy and everyone is too busy to notice until all the threads combine: a big wedding order from Yassir’s mom, hijabs being taken off and put on, and Ainy taking a stand.

WHY I LIKE IT:

The book hits close to some events I have experienced in my life, to the point that I had to check if the book had the typical disclaimer that the characters are a work of fiction and any resemblance is coincidental.  The characters feel that real, and their emotions that relatable, that even at my old age, I was moved, invested, and unable to look away.

I love that the author provides a lot of perspectives about hijab, but does not make a heavy handed judgement, the title of the book hints that women should be respected, and valued, no matter how they dress, and the mom in the book does a great job of setting that tone as she asks her clients how they feel in different clothes, as she models how her daughter’s choice to wear or not wear hijab is a reflection of their relationship with Allah swt, as her decision to wear niqab is hers.

There is no internalized Islamophobia, no othering, no watering down.  The book is solid and I think even if you don’t agree with the choices the characters make, the writing is strong enough that you can see why the characters do what they do for them.

My only real critique is the cover.  I don’t know why, but I don’t love it.  It doesn’t scream fashion and Islam, and the strength of the writing, the characters, and their summer together deserve a better visual representation, sorry.

While I can see why some people would not “approve” of the book, and some will love the book, I think in an environment of discussion and someone qualified (not me) to guide young readers, this book would be an incredibly empowering, book to think about, enjoy, and relate to in an Islamic school book club setting.
